Every year the Cajun Heritage Festival honors one of its members whose work and support of the club makes the festival a success. This year the honor goes to Merlene Lefort.
Merlene has been a member of the Cajun Heritage Festival for over 20 years and a board member for the last 3 years. Merlene is currently serving as the club secretary. Along with helping the club behind the scenes every year, Merlene is also very active in the carving world as well. Merlene has been carving for 8 years competing in several contest, and winning numerous awards.
Merlene says carving gives her a peace of mind, enjoying the burning and painting stages the most of all. Merlene draws inspiration from her father and grandfather who dug out their own piroques.
Merlene is also proud of her family, being married for 42 years with 5 children.
Merlene has always been a large help to the club. It is because of Merlene's hard work and effort that the board dedicates the 2009 Cajun Heritage Festival to Merlene Lefort, a fine woman whose dedication to the club is greatly appreciated.
